Traditional Korean Musical Instrument and Dance Classes

The Korean YMCA in Japan holds classes for traditional Korean instruments (janngu, gayageum) and traditional Korean dance.
These classes are taught in one-year courses that start in April, but can also be joined midway through.
We also arrange occasional class observations (to observe a class in progress, please make a reservation in advance).

Janngu Class

The janngu is a traditional Korean percussive instrument.
It was played both at royal palaces and among the common people.

The YMCA’s course teaches the rhythm of p’ungmul (also known as nongak, meaning “farm music”), which was long passed down among the common people of Korea, and the samul nori rhythm that was born from it.

In addition to the janngu, students in the intermediated and advanced classes also learn to perform samul nori using the kkwaenggwari (handbell), the buk (drum), and the jing (gong).

Gayageum Class

The Gayageum is a twelve-stringed instrument that represents Korea. It is also well known in Japan due to the similar “Shiragigoto” (or Silla Dynasty harp) stored in Nara’s famous Shosoin treasure house.

It is similar in shape to the Japanese koto, but uses different performance techniques, such as not using a plectrum, and features a different sound.

Why not learn the gayageum, an instrument whose tones have long conveyed the living breath of the Korean people!

Korean Dance Class

Why not try learning Korean dance and its many enchanting features, including an exquisite wardrobe and elegantly beautiful steps!

We start by learning the basic steps and then create a dance performance over the course of a year.

In the intermediate class, students also learn performance pieces in sword dance (geommu), Buddhist monk dance (seungmu)and salpuri dance.

Children’s classes

The Korean YMCA in Japan holds Korean language classes and multi-cultural programs for children during the summer and winter school breaks. Please inquire with our International Culture Department for details about program content and schedules.
