Janngu Class
The janngu is a traditional Korean percussive instrument.
It was played both at royal palaces and among the common people.
The YMCA’s course teaches the rhythm of p’ungmul (also known as nongak, meaning “farm music”), which was long passed down among the common people of Korea, and the samul nori rhythm that was born from it.
In addition to the janngu, students in the intermediated and advanced classes also learn to perform samul nori using the kkwaenggwari (handbell), the buk (drum), and the jing (gong).
